My new resolution for this month is to get more exercise and lose about 10 pounds, so off I went this morning to a water aerobics class at LA Fitness. Met a lovely 84 year old lady, Rose, and we chatted for a while before class started. Rose is a phenomenal woman who has 7 children, the last two twin girls born when she was in her 40's. She told me that Monday's class was deep water aerobics, which was not her favorite. I soon found out why! After strapping on my blue flotation belt, I valiently tried to emulate the young, energetic instructor. We cross-country skied, did jumping jacks, and wildly waved arms and legs while moving forwards, backwards and side to side. I kept upending myself and wandering inadvertently into other people, but I didn't let my inexperience stop my efforts. After 50 minutes my heart rate was up to the target and I felt sufficiently waterlogged as I dragged myself out of the pool and into the sauna, where I relaxed like a true Finn and dried out a bit. Then, after a quick shower I spent a whole 2 minutes on the stair stepper before leaving to get a much needed haircut. There are classes every morning at 9 AM, and I intend to be there all week.
